Juniper house, tours and workshops

In the 500-year-old village of Leedri in Western Saaremaa, syrup masters produce an enchanting delicacy from juniper and sugar by adding nuts, berries, herbs and spices. According to popular belief, juniper grants vitality and health, provides lungs with marine refreshment and bones with summer heat, gives strength to your voice.

The ingredients of the products are carefully selected, and picked from the clean seaside of Saaremaa. Juniper syrup is an Estonian relative of the world-famous maple syrup. It’s applicable in food instead of maple syrup, sugar and honey. In addition, an intriguing addition to cold and hot drinks (juice, yoghurt, fruit cocktails, coffee, tea), to pastries (black, brown and white bread, cookies), to desserts (pudding, muesli, pancakes, whipped cream, ice cream).  Add it to fish and meat marinade, to salty and sweet sauces.

Tour with lady of the house, Liis will give you an extensive overview what’s special about juniper, how they harvest and use it. Together you will pass along Orbu Farmstead and its beautiful garden. Tour ends with a tasty degustation, accompanied by crystal clear and fresh well water. Upon request, home-made rye bread, herb butter and local cheese.

To make the most of your experience, prepare your own juniper body scrub. If you’re more of a foodie, making your own viking salt is a must. There’s an option to order a coffee break.

Lady of the house – Liisi

Liisi is born and raised in Leedri village. Together with her mother Maret and generator of the juniper syrup idea Anu, three ladies created an artisan food product – Juniper syrup was born in Orbu farmstead kitchen in 2011. By now, it has grown to a success story based on local ingredients – the juniper tree that grows on the coasts of Saaremaa.
